Last week on Wednesday May 20th, the governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, announced that gyms would be left out of the phase 2 reopening. We have made the decision that we will defy this order.
We are defying the governor’s order for two reasons:
- The North Carolina constitution states “We hold it to be self-evident that all persons are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, the enjoyment of the fruits of their own labor, and the pursuit of happiness.” Many lawsuits have been filed on behalf of other gym owners on this basis, that neither the state nor the governor have the right to prevent citizens from engaging in legal business and they lack the right to stop citizens from maintaining their mental and physical health.
- For many of our clients, this gym is a part of their daily life, and they use our services and equipment to fight osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, drug and alcohol addiction, and depression. Without this gym, many of these people’s lives will slowly start to degrade and unravel.
The mental and physical health of our clients is the entire reason we do what we do. We are in this business to help people live happier and healthier lives, and currently the governor and his mandate are illegally preventing us from providing these services. We respect the laws of this land and those who uphold those laws, but when these laws defy the basic rights of the citizens, we will no longer comply with them or with those who seek to prevent us from our exercising our basic freedoms and rights.
We recognize that for some of you, working out at home until this is all over with or “under control”, is perfectly fine, and we support your decision to stay home. We will continue to support our clients who choose to stay home, by loaning out equipment and writing home workouts, and we will continue to do so as long as you need us to, until you are ready to come back. That is your decision and we support you. If you have borrowed our equipment, don’t worry, we have enough here for right now for those who have come back, so please don’t feel any guilt or pressure to bring anything back, we are fine for now. For those of you who are ready to come back, we welcome you with open arms, from six feet away, sorry no hugs for a few months! For us, this is about allowing adults to make their own decisions.
If you make the decision to come back, there are some strict rules, very simple, everyone must wash their hands before they begin their workout, and everyone must wipe down anything they touch or use. These are the same practices we use to prevent the spread of hepatitis and MRSA. If you are not feeling well, please do not come in to the gym. We take risks every time we drive a car, every time we do box jumps, and every time we snatch a heavy weight overhead, we try to mitigate these risks and do everything we can to prevent injury, and we will do everything we can to prevent any spread of any infectious disease or virus inside this gym.
For now, there are no scheduled classes. Until we have at least half of our members back it does not make sense for us to schedule classes. There is an AC workout on the board and a coach is here to answer any questions and help you out if needed.
Lastly, we want to thank all our members who have continued to support us. We are not financially able to pause everyone’s membership payments, while this virus is spreading, all of our bills are still due, rent, utilities, internet, insurance, and taxes. Without your support we could not pay our bills and there would be no gym to come back to. You know we love what we do here and we will sell our souls to keep this gym open, it is our life, and we thank you for your continued support.
Please know that we truly love all of you and we wish you all the best!
