Power Yoga Can Fix Your Winter Blues

Winter Blues

Snow. Sleet. Ice. Cold. Scarfs. Jackets. Wind. Wool Socks.

Has the winter weather added winter blues to your list of moods? It’s likely that most of us experience some sort of blues in the winter time due to shorter days, less sun exposure, and cold weather. What better way to turn those winter blues around with Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold) in a Power Yoga class. From Tadasana (Mountain Pose), fold forward from the hips with a slight bend in the knees, hands falling forward towards the toes. Bending the knees in Uttanasana helps to support the low back and keep the hamstrings from over extending. During a Power Yoga class, we may do anywhere from 10-20 forward folds in a class!  Uttanasana offers a world of benefits to your mind and body. Some of the benefits of Uttanasana include the following:

  • Calms the mind and can help with mild depression
  • Helps relieve stress
  • Helps relieve insomnia and headaches
  • Stimulates the liver and kidneys
  • Stretches the hamstrings, calves, and hips
  • Strengthens the thighs and knees
  • Improves digestion
  • Reduces fatigue and anxiety
  • Provides relief for asthma, high blood pressure, infertility, osteoporosis, and sinusitis
